Highlight What’s Next with the Next Task Block

The Next Task block is designed to keep your customers focused on what matters most. It surfaces the single most relevant task from your selected action plans—right where your customers need it. Whether you're guiding someone through onboarding, a project rollout, or a multi-step implementation, this block ensures the next step is always clear.

This article walks you through when to use the block, how it works, and what configuration options are available.

When to Use the Next Task Block

Use the Next Task block to:

  • Highlight the next action your customer needs to take without them needing to scroll through the full action plan.

  • Create a streamlined onboarding experience where tasks are surfaced in context (e.g., next to documents or meeting prep).

  • Reinforce a clear sequence across pages in multi-stage customer journeys.

It works best as a compact preview of your larger action plan(s), especially when paired with other blocks like content, progress tracking, or forms.

📌 You can add multiple Next Task blocks to different parts of a portal, each showing the next step from a different action plan.

How It Works

The Next Task block displays a single upcoming task from one or more selected action plans.

Once the current task is completed, the block automatically updates to show the next one—no need to refresh. Customers can mark tasks as done directly in the block, and clicking on the rest of the task surface opens the full task details.

What’s shown in the block:

  • Task title

  • Due date

  • Assignees (with avatars)

  • Action buttons (complete task)

  • Optional short description field below the headline

✅ Completed tasks trigger a subtle animation and confetti celebration, then transition to the next task.

The logic for determining the “next” task follows your selected sorting option:

  • Due date: The soonest upcoming task

  • Order in space: Based on the order of milestones, blocks, and pages in your portal

The block also respects visibility settings:

  • Tasks from hidden pages, milestones, or blocks will be skipped

  • If no visible tasks remain, the block shows an "All tasks done" state with a button to view the action plan

Configuration Options

You can fully configure the Next Task block from the block settings sidebar.

1. Action Plan Selection

Choose one or multiple action plans from the space. The block will always show the next task across your selected plans.

2. Sorting Method

Decide how the next task should be selected:

  • By due date

  • By order in space (first task shown in your space structure)

3. Layout Style

Pick between two display styles depending on the visual weight you want:

  • Bold:

    • Uses your brand highlight color as background

    • Task text appears in white (or configured text color)

    • Great for high emphasis areas like first portal page

  • Light:

    • White background with subtle border

    • Matches the standard look of other blocks

What Happens When Tasks Are Hidden or Moved?

The block adapts automatically if:

  • A page, milestone, or MAP block is hidden → Next visible task is shown

  • The task order changes → New next task is displayed based on the updated sort logic

  • All relevant tasks are hidden or completed → Empty state is shown

This ensures the block always remains in sync with what’s actually visible to the customer.
